Off Our Backs
Editorial Project, 2006
This is a redesign of a self-described radical feminist news journal. My main objectives were
to inject some visual energy into the publication, add some richness to the content, and provide some consistency in the typography.
New sections were created including letters to the editor, news commentary, book and music reviews, classifieds, and a news section consisting of multiple short news stories of special interest to feminists. The most unique section is called One Woman’s Journal. Jumping off the feminist tenet that the personal is political, this section features approximately four spreads of an artist’s journal or sketchbook. She also illustrates the section dividers in the magazine. This adds illustration to each issue that has its own distinct identity.
I proposed a two color printing job to keep within a small budget. To keep that energy high,
one color was to change in each subsequent issue, and one was to stay the same.
