Fear and Excess
Editorial Project, 2006
This book looks at fear as being the root cause for much that is dysfunctional in the United States. It looks at fear used as a political tool and as a personal inhibitor. Could fear also have something to do with all the excesses we find in American society?
The collected essays cover the topic of fear in politics from the days of slavery to the climate of politically induced fear we live in today. In the middle of the book is a section of questions harvested from an on-line advice forum from people who are scared of one thing or another in their personal lives. The back of the book holds the answers they received. The end papers contain an exhaustive alphabetical list of phobias. The photographs collected from the internet explore excess of wealth, materialism, patriotism, vanity, etc. I photographed each one from my computer screen to give the sense of being viewed from a TV or security camera.
